What to Expect from Carolina Dunes

Carolina Dunes provides structured inpatient treatment in Leland, North Carolina, for patients with serious mental health concerns and dual diagnosis disorders. Our patients include adolescents, adults, and older adults who are experiencing acute psychiatric needs. We value honesty and respect, part of which includes being transparent about what we offer.

Getting Started

From the first moments that a patient and their loved ones interact with our team, we want them to understand that they are an important part of the treatment process.

  • Assessment: This is an interview that happens before admission, which allows our clinicians to determine what type of services would be most helpful for a specific patient. We discuss past and present medical and mental health with the patient, who is welcome to bring along family or friends for support. Carolina Dunes offers free, confidential assessments.
  • Diagnosis: An assessment helps us to ensure that the patient has an accurate mental health diagnosis, so that we can offer the best possible treatment. At Carolina Dunes, we treat mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, as well as substance use disorders that occur alongside mental illness.
  • Referrals: Sometimes, when we complete an assessment with a patient, it becomes clear that our facility is not the best option to meet their needs. If this happens, we provide resources and options to make sure that they can get the help they need and deserve.
  • Individualized treatment: If an assessment indicates that our facility is a good fit for a patient and the decision is made to move forward with treatment, a tailored care plan will be developed to meet their unique needs.
  • Patient financing: Our team strives to keep your stress to a minimum, and this includes stress about how to pay for the care you need. We accept many forms of insurance, including Medicaid and Medicare. We also offer payment plans and may be able to offer financial assistance.

Therapies We Offer

Carolina Dunes offers a wide range of evidence-based therapies. Some of these include:

  • Individual therapy: In these sessions, a patient meets one-on-one with a mental health clinician to work on issues that are impacting their mental health.
  • Family therapy: When a family gets added support with communication and coping, it can strengthen the entire unit and help our patients make a smoother transition home.
  • Group therapy: Discussion groups are led by a therapist and can help patients to share knowledge and practice skills together before they need to use them in the outside world. They are also an important part of the structure and routine in an inpatient setting.
  • Occupational therapy: This is a type of therapy that helps people adapt how they do things, in order to allow them to be more independent and get what they want out of life. As it relates to mental health, occupational therapy often supports patients with developing skills around planning, organizing, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Recreational therapy: Recreational therapy is related to occupational therapy, but it is more focused on helping people find ways to enjoy their lives and get more involved in their communities.
  • Art therapy: Sometimes words aren’t enough to express difficult emotions and experiences. Art therapy is led by a therapist who has specialized training to use art to tap into a different part of the brain, to help people find new ways to discuss what they are going through and find solutions.

Other Services We Offer

The patients we serve have a wide range of needs and concerns, many of which extend beyond the therapies we provide to them.

  • Medical management: It is not uncommon for people with mental health disorders to also have physical health diagnoses. Our physician-led interdisciplinary team helps to ensure all patients receive the medical support they need.
  • Medication management: Whether our clients are continuing their existing medications or adding new ones, our team ensures that they receive their meds and the education they need to stay on track with them after discharge.
  • Case management and discharge planning: The time a patient spends with us is brief, and we are always thinking about what will need to happen to facilitate a smooth transition back to their family, home, and community. This includes helping patients and their families to schedule outpatient services and find local community resources that can offer support.

The Carolina Dunes team is dedicated to providing compassionate, trauma-informed care to people diagnosed with serious mental health conditions. We partner with community, non-profit, first responder, and other mental health organizations to provide the specific services our patients need.
